You and I

When you are ‘The other woman’?

There are three major religions beliefs in Nigeria and this usually determines who is considered as “the other woman” Most men who believe in the Islamic faith or are traditional worshipers are allowed to marry more than one wife, therefore being in a relationship with more than one woman is acceptable to them. On the other hand, the Christian religion preaches a “one man, one wife“ relationship. This has helped to make Polygamy unpopular in the South and has created “the other woman” analogy. It is worthy of note that while some women are not aware that they are “the other woman”, most willingly accept this title. Here is a description of what “the other woman” must accept.

She must accept to share his attention.

If you are the other woman, you know about the existence of his ‘number one’ and she does not know about your existence. Therefore, you must share his attention with her and bow to her superior need for attention. This is because you knew of and accepted her existence and must understand the obligations he has towards her. So do not complain when he picks her calls, leaves you to resolve an emergency she has or when you are on a date with him and he orders a takeaway dish for her.

She must not be seen in family or business occasions.

If you are the other woman, you are also his dirty little secret. Whenever and wherever a man wishes to portray an air of respectability, he will never acknowledge your existence. So do not feel hurt when you are in the crowd and he shows utmost respect and affection for his ‘number one’ but ignores you, that’s the life you chose

She must be faithful to him.

It is ironic that the man expects the loyalty of ‘the other woman.’He allows her freedom within reason but ultimately cannot tolerate the presence of another man in her life. For example, if she picks another man’s call or runs off to an appointment with another man, in his presence, he feels jealous. Do you think the man should be blamed for his jealous reactions?.
