Against the backdrop of the agitation of the Nigerian citizens resident in Delta, Edo, Ekiti and Ondo States of Nigeria for reliable distribution of electricity, The Nigerian Bar Association in Edo State, through its spokesman, Prince Collins Ogiegbaen Esq, has declared their intention to undertake a class action on behalf of the citizens. Having in mind its position as the leader of the Civil Society Groups in the State, the organisation has duly heard the cry of the people and made haste to seek justice on their behalf.
Speaking at the Opening Ceremony of the Legal Year held on October 4th, 2019. The organisation said " The Bar wishes to use the occasion of this address to join the thousands of electricity consumers across the four (4) States of Edo, Ondo, Delta and Ekiti who have remained under the stronghold and oppressive tendencies of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) to call on the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to resist the urge and pressure to renew the license for distribution to this company. We further recommend the immediate commencement of a bidding process for the vast asset of the distribution networks in other to make Edo State the true electricity hub it was meant to be.
We hereby call on the Edo State Government to immediately set up a rural electricity board or agency to commence a robust and transparent process of issuing off grid license to small and medium scale generation and distribution companies to provide the much needed succor to the hardworking and resilient electricity consumers in the nooks and crannies of the State. In the interim, the Nigerian Bar Association, Benin Branch being the leader of the civil society groups in the State shall within the coming week commence a process of class action against the BEDC, NERC and the Minister of Power in response to the yearnings of a majority of our people whose rights and access to energy and electricity for optimal development had been breached without remorse by the sham privatization of the sector and the activities of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company.
Prince Collins Ogiegbaen Esq (Chairman Nigerian Bar Association Benin Branch popularly known as the Lion Bar).
The fight for Electrical independence continues, Yet the heart of the people rejoice because the lion of the bar stands with them.
